Project Overview

Blue Line Designs contacted Pikus 3D to develop a family of custom concrete seating elements for North Cottonwood Commons, a major civic park project in Farmington, Utah. The design intent called for multiple sizes of durable concrete seating to be distributed throughout the park, including around the splash pad and surrounding public gathering areas.

Pikus 3D designed and fabricated approximately 13 Bolide concrete seating elements in several sizes and three finish variations. These elements provided permanent, high-performance site furnishings capable of withstanding public use while contributing to the architectural character of the park.

Later in the project schedule, an additional design challenge emerged at the splash pad. The water was intended to move through a branching, river-like path, but too much volume was flowing down one fork. Blue Line Designs contacted Pikus 3D for assistance with a practical field solution.

In response, Pikus 3D proposed a series of custom concrete steppers that would serve two purposes: creating an interactive landscape feature and restricting enough water volume to rebalance the flow. The steppers allowed water to pass through while reducing the excessive flow through the affected branch of the splash pad.

Brent Potter originated the stepper solution and should be credited with solving this water-flow challenge in collaboration with Pikus 3D. The final installation added a playful, architecturally integrated concrete feature while resolving a functional hydraulic issue within the park’s splash pad environment.

Project Scope

Architectural precast concrete; Bolide concrete seating elements; custom concrete steppers; public park site furnishings; splash pad hardscape features; water-diversion landscape elements.

Lead Time

A matter of a few weeks for both the Bolide concrete seating elements and the custom concrete steppers.

Project Challenge

The initial challenge was to provide a coordinated family of concrete seating elements in multiple sizes and finish options for a high-traffic civic park environment. The seating needed to be durable, visually consistent, and appropriate for a public landscape setting with heavy pedestrian use.

A second challenge emerged later in the schedule when the splash pad’s water-flow pattern was not performing as intended. Too much water was moving down one fork of the branching river feature. Pikus 3D helped solve this condition by proposing concrete steppers that acted as both an interactive amenity and a water-flow restriction device.

The solution required the steppers to appear intentional within the splash pad design, perform in a wet public-use environment, and manage water movement without reading as a purely utilitarian correction.
