Question 1

What is a custom precast concrete seat wall?

Accepted Answer

A custom precast concrete seat wall is an architectural concrete element designed to provide seating while also helping define or organize a space. Unlike standard catalog products, custom seat walls can be developed around specific dimensions, curves, profiles, finishes, and site conditions.

Question 2

Can custom concrete seat walls be curved?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Custom concrete seat walls can incorporate radial, sweeping, serpentine, and irregular curves. The final geometry is reviewed for fabrication, engineering, transportation, assembly, and installation requirements.

Question 3

What is the difference between precast, GFRC, and our seat walls?

Accepted Answer

Traditional precast concrete is generally produced by casting concrete into molds. GFRC uses glass-fiber-reinforced concrete to create thinner and often lighter architectural components. Pikus uses a digitally driven fabrication process that provides another option for creating custom architectural seat walls with complex, project-specific geometry.

Question 4

Can lighting be integrated into an architectural seat wall?

Accepted Answer

Lighting can often be coordinated into a custom architectural seat wall through recessed areas, concealed channels, openings, or other project-specific details. Electrical requirements should be discussed early so the necessary components and access points can be incorporated into the design.

Question 5

Can a custom seat wall also function as a planter?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Custom seat walls can be designed alongside planters or developed as combined seating and landscape elements. Drainage, waterproofing, soil conditions, planting requirements, and structural needs must be coordinated as part of the overall design.
